Montenegro is a country on the Balkan Peninsula, whose territory covers just 13,812 square kilometres, yet various terrain can be encountered within its bounds. From stunning beaches and charming towns on the Adriatic coast to the rugged mountains, deep canyons, and freshwater ecosystems. As such it attracts many outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Another alluring thing about this small land is that you could be exploring the canyons or climbing the northern mountains in the morning and in the evening, you could already be drinking wine by the sea.
Culture and History of Montenegro
Montenegro is rich in cultural and historical depth, its roots tracing back to the Paleolithic era at the archaeological site of Crvena Stijena. From the ancient kingdom of Duklja, through various cultural influences including Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman, the nation’s identity was forged, creating a unique cultural mosaic.
The illustrious Petrović-Njegoš dynasty that reigned for centuries shaped the nation’s story from their seat in Cetinje, the Old Royal Capital. Montenegro’s natural beauty is equally revered as its past.
Nestled in the Balkans, it harbours four UNESCO World Heritage sites. Kotor, a town full of history, that sits between towering cliffs and the bright blue Adriatic Sea. Its mix of old-style buildings makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time. Just a short trip away is Durmitor National Park. This park offers impressive mountains, deep canyons, peaceful lakes, and dense forests, making it an ideal spot for outdoor enthusiasts. Montenegro’s local history and culture are a testament to its resilience and charm, captivating all who delve into its story.
National Cuisine
Montenegro’s cuisine is a delightful blend of Mediterranean tastes and Balkan heartiness, reflecting the country’s rich history and diverse geography. Must-try delicacies from Montenegro start with Njeguški pršut (prosciutto) and cheese. Kačamak is a unique Montenegrin dish made of cornmeal, potatoes, and cheese.
The coastal region’s Mediterranean influence is evident in the significance of olives and olive oil, with Bar, home to the world’s oldest olive tree, being the epicentre. Montenegrin tables are incomplete without their local wines, made from indigenous grape varieties and Rakija, a potent fruit brandy. Thus, Montenegro’s cuisine provides a flavourful narrative of its cultural and geographical diversity.
Mentality
The stereotype of Montenegrins as lazy is an oversimplification that misses the rich essence of our culture and history. Montenegro’s mountainous terrain historically posed challenges for farming, leading to a slower pace of life. This has sometimes been misunderstood as laziness, but it’s more about savouring moments and not rushing through tasks. Long meals, coffee breaks, and extended family gatherings reflect this approach. The word “Lagano” encapsulates this, translating to “Chill / No Worries/ Sure, whatever!”
In Montenegro, you’ll often hear “Lagano” in response to various situations, signalling a laid-back attitude.
Montenegrins are renowned for their sense of humour, often leaning toward the dark and ironic. They tackle any topic with a knack for infusing even the most solemn situations with dry wit.
Shaped by various influences throughout history the people of Montenegro have a diverse cultural background and rich history. Known for their hospitality and warmth toward visitors Montenegrins are a society of people who value their traditions and customs. If you decide to visit, they will welcome you with open arms and lots of traditional food you will hardly have the heart to say no to.
